Any of you who know me know that I love the game of basketball, however, I hate the NBA.
Because of the hate for the Association – I don’t watch any games – regular season or the playoffs. But, as fate would have it last night, I went with friends after a meeting to grab a drink and with no Cubs or White Sox on, game 6 of the NBA Finals dominated the TVs.
So, I watched.
I watched early on as LeBron James – the greatest athlete in the world – finally found some heart to go with his talent for a second game in a row and dominated the game like he should every time out.
But, then it happened.
Golden State started to find its shot. Three-pointers rained and the lead began to shrink.
No worry Cleveland fans – the refs have your back. Phantom call after insane no calls followed until we had Klay Thompson get called for an offensive foul while shooting a three-pointer and the prepubescent wonder Steph Curry get to the point where he throws his mouth guard and gets tossed from the game.
But why?
I understand why the NBA suspended Draymond Green the game before – I mean it was nice to have Craig Sager on the sideline and he wouldn’t have had that chance with a Warriors’ win in five. But, what was the reason last night?
Oh yeah – money.
With “How To Get Away With Murder” off for the season , ABC needs to pad the pocketbooks some way – so what better than a Game 7.
Now the only real drama about the series finale is which way will the NBA go.
Will King James bring a title to Cleveland – the town that just six years ago was burning his jersey in the streets when he took his talents to South Beach or will the basketball Gods (aka the NBA front office) shine down on the Warriors and let the 72-win darlings wrap up the season with a nice bow and a second-straight NBA title.
I guess we will have to tune in and find out – well, you can, I’ll be watching baseball and please save the text updates – I really don’t care.
