The Downers Grove Public Library reopened Wednesday evening after a suspicious package prompted the building to be evacuated earlier in the day.
“The Downers Grove Police Department completed their search of the Downers Grove Public Library building and the suspicious package that was reported,” Melissa Doornbos, public relations manager for the library, said in a statement.
Just after 3 p.m., the library sent out an email notifying people of the evacuation and that the library was closed until further notice.
“The library has been evacuated while police investigate a suspicious package,” Doornbos said in the email.
Downers Grove police investigated the incident, and authorities conducted a search of the building. At approximately 5:30 p.m., police finished their search of the building, and the library was allowed to reopen.
“We are grateful for our police force and a community that helped us spread the word,” the library tweeted. “Thank you.”
While the search was underway, the village of Downers Grove urged people to avoid the area near Downers Grove Public Library. The library also suggested people avoid the downtown area due to the presence of a large number of police officers and road closures.
The Downers Grove Police Department could not immediately be reached for comment.
