Westmont EIC announces 2016 Earth Month speaker series

The Westmont Environmental Improvement Commission is celebrating Earth Month 2016 with a series of presentations to be held at the Westmont Public Library.

A total of six presentations are scheduled between March 2 and May 2, covering topics such as lead hazards in the home, sustainability and gardening.

“I know that the Westmont community will find these presentations not only helpful, but valuable and insightful as well,” said Barbara Alvarez, of the Westmont Library’s adult services department and liaison to the EIC.

Understanding Native Plants in Residential Settings
March 2 at 7 p.m.  Speaker: Seth Crackel, Western Territory PIZZO & ASSOC., LTD. This presentation will provide an understanding of the role native plants play in our ecosystem as well as the regulations involved in the restoration of local ecosystems.

Are There Lead Hazards in My Home?
April 4 at 6 p.m. Speaker: Mary T. McAuliffe, Attorney. Learn about potential sources of hazardous lead in our homes, yards and playgrounds. Even low levels of lead can have a detrimental affect on our health and that of our children. Ms. McAuliffe will set forth important steps you can take to protect your family.

Radon’s Indecent Exposure
April 4 at 6:45 p.m.
Speaker: Elliott Wall and Kelly Sibert, Elliott & Associates

Become an educated homeowner and learn all about radon. Various topics will be discussed, from how to detect radon via different testing methods to how it may affect your health. Also, a primer will be given on the issues involved should radon be discovered during the purchase or sale of real estate.

Sustainable Homes and Year-Round Indoor Garden
April 11 at 7 p.m.
Speaker: Victor Zaderej, Molex Solid State Lighting Group

Mr. Zaderej will describe the newest technology features of a ‘sustainable’ home, as well as demonstrate how to grow leafy greens, herbs and vegetables inside your home year-round.

What is a green home?
April 12 at 7 p.m.
Speaker: Laureen T. Blissard, LTLB envirotecture AIA, ALA, NCARB,

LEED AP BD+C, LEED AP HOMES, USGBC LEED® Faculty™, LEED for Homes Green Rater, HERS Rater, Greenstar Professional, Chicago Self-Cert

Ms. Blissard will discuss various concepts of what constitutes a ‘green’ home, and will also provide guidance and answer any questions with regard to ‘‘green’ home improvement projects.

GMOs and You
May 2 at 7 p.m.
Speaker: Amy Cox, CHC, AADP, omstead, LLC

Join certified health coach Amy Cox for an informative discussion aimed to help consumers make educated decisions about what is best for their families with regard to genetically-modified foods. Attendees will receive a non-GMO vegetable starter plant to take home (first come/first served).
