Niles tweaks requirements for dumpster rentals

The village of Niles is reminding residents and businesses that, as of Jan. 1, they are required to rent dumpsters from Groot Inc.

According to the village, it is requiring the change for a number of reasons that benefit residents and businesses, as well as keep village costs down.

The permitting process the village used prior to the new contract required residents to purchase a permit that ranged in price from $50 to $100.

The permit price paid for the costs associated with the community development department’s monitoring of waste haulers to ensure they abided by the village’s rules regarding dumpster location.

With Groot overseeing all dumpster placements, the village said residents are no longer required to purchase a permit.

Groot is also required to follow more stringent guidelines when placing dumpsters in driveways.

For example, Groot is now required to place plywood under the dumpster by request of the resident to protect driveways.

This is optional and by resident request only.

Placing plywood in the driveway will result in an additional fee for the resident.

Additionally, the village said a portion of each dumpster rental – $1.50 per cubic container yard – goes back to the village.

This revenue is put into the village’s garbage fund, which officials said reduces the overall cost of refuse service for residents in Niles.
