St. John Brebeuf School in Niles announced that it will host its 2016 open house activities Jan. 31.
The event will start at 9 a.m. with a family Mass in the church, and school tours will be given from 10 a.m. to noon. The Holy Name Society Men’s Club will provide free hot dogs, chips, soft drinks, hot chocolate and coffee during the open house.
The school said its popular ice rink will be opened that day with a blessing by Father Michael Meany and a special guest appearance by Chicago Wolves’ mascot Skates. A shoot the puck contest is scheduled for 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the ice rink (weather permitting) or in the school gym.
Attendees can also take part in raffle drawings for fabulous prizes, including many items donated by the Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago Wolves and local merchants. All participants will receive a raffle ticket. Additional raffle tickets may be purchased from school representative that day or in advance at the school office.
A “name the ice rink” contest sponsored by The Bugle is underway, with a first-place prize of a $100 Sports Authority gift certificate and a second-place prize of a $50 certificate to Kappy’s Restaurant in Morton Grove. The winning entries will be selected by the Holy Name Society Men’s Club and Meany and announced at the open house.
The SJB open house kicks off Catholic Schools Week, which runs Jan. 31 to Feb. 5. The week will feature dress down days, teacher and student appreciation days, and a kick-off to the SJB School annual appeal, according to principal Elise Matson.
