JULY 22

Family Campfire. 7 to 9 p.m. at Wildwood Nature Center, 529 Forestview Ave., Park Ridge. The entire family will enjoy the peaceful night air while sitting around a fire listening to stories, singing songs, and making everyone’s favorite – s’mores! Enjoy a night hike around the pond. Family Event: The Three Billy Goats Gruff. 6-6:45 p.m. at Niles library, 6960 Oakton. In a special evening performance, Improv Playhouse Theatre returns with a hilarious rendition of the old folk tale. Fun for the whole family!

 

Glenview Cycle Presents: Bike Safety and Fix-Its. 4 to 4:45 at Morton Grove Public Library, 6140 Lincoln Ave. Join Alan Rubin of Glenview Cycle inside the library to learn all about your bike, from tires to brakes, and how to be a better, safer rider. Later, Alan, and his team will take it outside the library for a bike riders clinic. So ride your bike and park it at the Library. The experts will look at the bikes as part of the program for tips on riding and repair recommendations. This program is for children grades 2-6. Family Big-Screen Movie. 2-4 p.m. at Niles Public Library, 6960 Oakton. Drop in for a big-screen movie and a little snack! Caregivers need to stay in the room with children grades K-2.

 

Camp MGPL Photowalk. 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Morton Grove Public Library, 6140 Lincoln Ave. Let’s take a walk in the woods! Explore a variety of composition tips and techniques you can use to enhance your photos. Bring your camera or smartphone and wear comfortable walking shoes for this fun excursion. Final Olympic Program: film and discussion with Liga Terezin. 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center, 9603 Woods Drive, Skokie. View this deeply moving documentary about a soccer league that played in the Terezin ghetto. Free with museum admission.

 

Mark Dvorak Concert: Just Something My Grandma Used to Sing. 10-11 a.m. at Niles library, 6960 Oakton. Singer/songwriter, Mark Dvorak, from the Old Town School of Folk Music, will entertain with classic material from the American songbook and folk favorites while accompanying himself on the guitar and the 5-string banjo.

 

Facebook 101. 6:30-8 p.m. at Niles Library, 6960 Oakton. Learn how to set up a Facebook account, manage privacy settings, and connect with family and friends. Basic mouse and keyboarding skills are needed. Bring your email address and password.

 

JULY 29

Summer Fun and The Lisa Rene Band. 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Oak Park, at Main and Ottawa streets. Face painting and a balloon artist will delight children of all ages while The Lisa Rene Band performs.

 

Quidditch of the Mind. 4-5 p.m. at Niles Public Library, 6960 Oakton St. Grades 5-12. Test your Harry Potter knowledge, practice your s-p-e-l-l-i-n-g and try some physical challenges in honor of the release of the newest book by JK Rowling. The fates inform you to expect a special guest.

 

JULY 29-30

Family Camping at Oak Park. 6 p.m. July 29 to 8 a.m. July 30 at Oak Park, at Main and Ottawa streets. Come enjoy a night of camping under the stars.  Have some s’mores around the campfire, tell some ghost stories and enjoy the fresh air.

 

JULY 30

Country Farm Fair. 12 to 3 p.m. at Wildwood Nature Center, 529 Forestview Ave., Park Ridge. Pet cows, chickens, goats, and more in the petting zoo featuring over 20 animals. During the event, cowpokes big and small can try their hand at fun free contests like pie eating, potato sack races, tug of war, and a water balloon toss. Survivors Speak: Matus Stolov. 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at at Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center, 9603 Woods Drive, Skokie. Matus was born in Minsk, Belarus, in 1928, the son of Polish Jewish parents who had fled to Russia after the 1917 revolution to build the socialist utopia. When Germany invaded in June 1941, Matus, his mother, and his older brother tried to escape eastward. They ran for a train and the two sons were able to jump aboard; when the mother couldn’t make it, Matus jumped down and stayed with her. Meet Matus to hear his unbelievable story. Free with Museum admission.
