Plainfield Central baseball took home its first regional title in its 7-1 win over Waubonsie Valley Saturday in the Downers Grove South Regional final.
Sultan Solebo pitched a no-hitter, striking out nine and allowing one unearned run with five walks. Matt Bunetta was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Cameron Cercone and David Ascencio (double) each had two hits, while Collin Hudetz had a pair of RBI.
Central advanced to the finals with a 5-2 win over Downers South the previous day. Brandon Callender picked up the win, allowing seven hits and two runs, one earned, in seven innings, striking out four. Ascencio had two solo home runs and Bunetta added two hits with a double.
•Plainfield South took down Joliet West 4-0 to win the Bradley-Bourbonnais Regional title. Konnor Ash pitched the shutout win and Jordan Mikel had a two-run homer.
The Cougars advanced to the regional final with a 5-4 win over the hosts Bradley-Bourbonnais, thanks to three runs in the bottom of the seventh and the game-winning hit from Mikel. Antonio Guitierrez had three hits, while Nick Enloe had a pair of hits and Mikel and John Galczak had two RBI each. Austin Marozas came on in relief to not allow a hit over the final 5.2 innings, striking out eight for the win.
•Plainfield North made it seven straight regional titles with a 12-0 win over Hinsdale Central in the Metea Valley Regional.
The wins by all four baseball teams marked the first time in District 202 history that all four Plainfield schools won regionals in a sport.
TENNIS
Central’s DJ Colantone matched a district record with four wins at the state meet. He opened play with wins over Kevin Wacnik of Stagg (6-0, 6-3) and Carlos Gutierrez of Fenwick (6-1, 6-1) before falling to Lucas Horve of Decatur-Lutheran 6-4, 6-4.
Colantone bounced back with wins over Raj Sinha of Springfield (6-1, 6-2) and Jeremy Learner of Highland Park (6-4, 6-4) before falling to Jack Geissler of JCA (6-4, 7-5).
VOLLEYBALL
Plainfield North won a pair of matches in the IHSA tournament before falling to the top ranked team in the state.
The Tigers topped Montini in the opener 25-13, 25-15 in the Oswego East Regional. They then took down Glenbard East 23-25, 25-18, 27-25 before falling to Glenbard West 25-16, 25-14.
•Plainfield East fell to Oswego East 32-30, 25-21 in the first round of the Oswego East Regional.
•Plainfield South fell to Joliet West 23-25, 25-23, 25-22 in a Lockport Regional opener. Donnie Doran had 17 digs, Logan Nash totaled nine kills and eight digs, Andrew Colantone had seven digs, Brandon Langys had eight digs and five kills, Matt Friddle totaled 19 assists and Rhome Apton added 14 blocks and seven kills.
•Plainfield Central lost to Lincoln-Way North 25-15, 25-17 in a Lockport Regional opener.
SOFTBALL
A season of high hopes and its first SPC title came to an abrupt end for Plainfield East in a 4-1 loss to Oswego in a regional semifinal. The Bengals (23-7) were held to three hits and Bianca Vozenilek allowed eight hits and four runs, two earned, while striking out seven in seven innings. East had beaten Oswego 2-1 the previous week and 12-7 earlier in the year.
•Plainfield North fell to Wheaton Warrenville South 8-5. Krista Ferry and Lexie Siwek each had three hits in defeat.
