Madelyn Alvarado, a choral student at Lockport Township High School, was selected to sing the National Anthem at the Illinois High School Association’s state competition for girls’ basketball game on Feb. 24.
Being chosen to sing at a state championship game is the highest possible honor that the state music organization can give a choral student. There were more than 700 students who auditioned for the District 1 choir and only 200 selected to continue. Of those 200 choral students, the top 16 were invited to audition to sing the national anthem. Of those 16 students, only two were selected to audition for the state fest, along with 16 other students from other districts. Of those 18 students, only six were chosen to sing the national anthem at the actual games.
That means that only six students were chosen to perform from a pool of 5,000 vocalists in the state.
