Three students at North named National Merit Scholars
Three students at North High School in Downers Grove are finalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSP), an academic competition for recognition and scholarships sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The designation recognizes a student’s “outstanding academic promise,” according to the NMSC.
About 34,000 commended students throughout the nation are recognized, which represents the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Of the 1.5 million entrants, approximately 15,000 of these students were named as finalists, which represents the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
The students named as National Merit Scholars include: Christopher Bull , John Cagney and Miles Christensen.
“Being named a National Merit Scholar is an elite recognition, and we are so proud of Chris, John and Miles for this accomplishment,” says Janice Schwarze, principal of North High. “This recognition is a validation of not only their natural abilities but also their commitment to learning.”

North senior receives Honorable Mention for All-State Academic Team
Miles Christensen, a senior at North High School in Downers Grove, received Honorable Mention in the 21st All-State Academic Team contest of the Illinois High School Association (IHSA). Christensen is a member of the track and field and cross country teams. Christensen was also named a finalist in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSP).
“This is a prestigious recognition program because it recognizes both academic and athletic achievements,” says Principal Janice Schwarze. “Miles is most deserving of this coveted award, and we couldn’t be more proud of him.”
Every IHSA member school was invited to nominate one female student and one male student by the February deadline. Nominees needed to possess a minimum 3.50 grade point average on 4.0 scale after their 7th semester, have participated in at least two IHSA sponsored sports or activities during each of the last two years and demonstrated outstanding citizenship.
The nominations were evaluated by a committee made up of IHSA principals, representatives of the Illinois Activities Directors Association and representatives of the Illinois Athletic Directors Association.
