Early morning Plainfield barn fire kills 18 horses

The Plainfield Fire Protection District was called to a 1:14 a.m. on Wednesday to a house barn fire at the intersection of Ridge and Wheeler roads according to the Plainfield Fire Protection District and ABC7 Eyewitness News.

Firefighters found the barn engulfed in fire and horse owners attempting to rescue the horses. Two people were injured while trying to rescue the horses and were transported to local medical facilities for treatment.

There were 30 horses inside the barn when the fire started.The owner of the stable put out an alert on Facebook asking people to help find 11 missing horses that were let out during the fire. By around 7:30 a.m., he said all of the horses had been accounted for.

The barn is a total loss and the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Plainfield Fire Protection District, the MABAS 15 fire investigators and the Plainfield Police Department.

The firefighting operation was a tender operation involving water shuttles and the Plainfield Fire Protection District was assisted by the following fire districts and fire departments: Troy, Channahon, Lockport, Naperville, Oswego, Lisbon-Seward, Minooka and Rockdale.
