A freight train carrying crude oil derailed Friday at 6:54 p.m. near Rte. 59 in Plainfield. There were no reported injuries, according to the Plainfield Police Department and ABC7 News.
About 25 cars derailed, police said.
Plainfield Police Department and Plainfield Fire Protection District worked to contain approximately 40,000 gallons of leaking oil from reaching the DuPage River. Several roadways including 143rd Street, Naperville/Plainfield Road, Route 126, Center Street, Eastern Avenue and Lockport Street were closed.
Although local businesses in the immediate area were evacuated, the incident did not require any residential evacuation.
Along with the fire and emergency management agencies, representatives from Com Ed, Canadian National, Hulchers (contractor used by CN) and the U.S. Department of Transportation were on the scene. Several other state and federal agencies have been notified and are en route.
