Homeowners in four of Plainfield’s popular subdivisions will see a makeover of their streets this summer, part of this year’s non-Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) street improvement program.

On June 19, members of the village board approved asphalt resurfacing inside the Wallin Woods, Dunmoor Estates, Prairie Ponds, and Shenandoah subdivisions. The work will include 18 roads within those three subdivisions.

In addition to road resurfacing, the project will also include replacement of select areas of concrete sidewalk, installation of new sidewalks, curb and gutter removal and replacement, drainage improvements, and road striping.

The cost of the project is $1.06 million, bid lower than the engineer’s estimate of $1.5 million.

The improvements are work included in the village budget outside the MFT, which are funds provided by the state for roadway improvements based on taxes taken at the pump.

The village chose the four subdivisions based on the village’s transportation plan, which tracks roads by age and need for repairs in order for staff to identify the roads which need the most immediate attention. Those decisions are based on pavement conditions, field observations, and optimization within a five-year timeframe.

“We keep tracks of all the projects,” said Superintendent of Public Improvements Randall Jessen. “About five years ago, we had an independent vendor come in… and they had done a third-party survey of the entire roadway network in the community. Using industry standards, they ranked all the roads on a condition from 100 to zero, and that was the benchmark we’ve used since then to put projects into the que. Those streets, based on needs and location, are what is in this particular plan.”

Jessen said the village streets are surveyed every five years, a thorough study to keep road maintenance needs up to date.

The following roads will undergo roadwork:

Wallin Woods – Fairbanks Court, Jolee Court, Dan Patch Drive, Illini Drive, Kingston Street, Lincoln-Way Street, Ingersoll Street, Hamlin Street, Eyre Circle

Dunmoor Estates – Kerr Street, Skyline Drive, Woods Way

Prairie Ponds – Skyline Drive, Skyline Court South, Skyline Court North

Shenandoah – Skyline Drive, Stags Leap Trail, Rockfish Lane, Northland Drive

Funding for this year’s improvements have been budgeting in the current fiscal year budget within the capital improvements/annual maintenance fund.

This year’s work will be completed by PT Ferro Construction of Joliet.
