More than 3,600 students recently headed back to school in one of East Maine School District 63’s seven schools – and just in time.

Maine Township’s MaineStreamers senior group delivered hundreds of schools supplies to help out as the school year got underway. Gathered in August at the group’s monthly luncheon, the collection of items donated included everything from backpacks and markers to notebooks and glue sticks.

“When school districts, townships and other institutions work together to create a caring, connected community, we all benefit,” District 63 Superintendent Scott Clay said. “Our partnership with Maine Township is a great example. We deeply appreciate the MaineStreamers’ generosity, and we’re always very proud when our schools support the Township Food Pantry, as well.”

Township Supervisor Carol Teschky said the seniors in the MaineStreamers group are “incredibly committed” to the community.

“The group often collects food donations at its monthly luncheon, but this summer they put a twist on that and decided to gather supplies,” she added. “District 63 serves so many of the children in the Township; donating these much-needed items was one way we could make a difference.”

MaineStreamers offers a variety of opportunities to all township residents aged 55 and older, including day trips, classes and other activities. Membership is free. For more information, visit www.mainetownship.com or call 847-297-2510.
